Use Title Tags Properly
Learn how to use title tags effectively for your website visitors and SEO.
Title tags are one of the most important on-page factors when considering search engine optimization; however they are used ineffictively in most cases. Here are some guidelines to use title tags in your greatest advantage:
1. Make sure all your title tags are not the exact same throughout your website; every webpage on your website should have a unique title tag.
2. Make sure the title tag represents the content of the page it is on. In short just make sure the text in your title tag actually appears somewhere in the content, and hopefully more than just once. This is one of the biggest mistakes people use when implementing title tags. Search engines are not stupid and can tell if your title tag is "utah autobody shop" when the content on the page describes a "california disneyland package".
3. If possible the incoming links to that page should have the title tag text in the incoming link text.
4. If there are any headings, bolded items, italized text, or lists on the page try and match them up with the title tag.
5. Keep the title tag short and focus on the most important keyword phrases you want to emphasize on that page. 4-8 words is usually optimal.
6. Remember that search engines use the title tag when displaying search results; make sure the title tag also will grab the attention of a search engine user and convince them to click on it to find out more.
