SEO by Geographic Location

If you were searching for a search engine optimization (SEO) company what keyword search terms would you search for in a search engine? Could I use the word "search" once more?

Most people feel more comfortable dealing with businesses that located within the same geographic area. This is because it facilitates face-to-face interaction, and there's something comforting about being able to tell a service provider "Don't mess with me, I know where you live."

What geographic locales would you assume are producing the most interest in SEO firms and search engine optimization services? California? New York? Maybe you'd be surprised to find out. According to Overture's keyword selector tool, these are the ten most popular geographic terms accompanying the search term "seo" where the number on the left represen
ts the number of searches done through Overture's network (which does not include Google, so double the number if you want a closer to accurate idea of total searches being performed) during January 2006.

3075 indianapolis seo
2872 seo india
1638 seo uk
1556 virginia seo
1487 va seo
1395 seo cleveland
1373 firm seo utah
1275 india seo company
1251 seo utah
1102 seo canada

Other top contenders include:

1074 firm india seo
945 seo montreal
840 expert india seo
812 san diego seo
800 seo atlanta
746 toronto seo company
727 seo spain
659 england seo
613 orange county en language seo
606 michigan ohio seo

Indianapolis? Ok, if you add up all the times India is in there, it beats out Indianapolis, but seriously, why Indianapolis? And is it just me or is it suspicious that you can't spell Indianapolis without "india"?

The other surprise for me was how many times "seo" was being searched for in Utah. Are there really more companies looking for seo services in Utah vs. California or New York? Apparently so. But why? Even though Utah prides itself on it's technically savvy population, it's still a tiny population relative to California, which can't exactly be called a technologically backwards place.

And Virginia? Again, if you asked me which would come first, Virginia or Chicago, I'd be an idiot to choose Virginia, but there it is. Go figure.

digg digg it!  delicious, mmm Add to del.icio.us

I think it's more a function of automated queries by SEO companies checking their ranks or competitors ranks for those keywords. There's probably a firm or two in Indianapolis who do daily ranking reports to see where they're showing up, which drives the numbers up. Same thing happening in Utah for those Utah words, I'm sure. If you're running adwords, you can check your impression and click numbers to get an idea of searches, but it's possible that those auto-generated queries are also driving up your impressions (and down your CTR). It sucks, but it happens, especially for SEO related keywords.

Ooops, I just noticed that you posted this originally a year ago, but I'll still comment since I went through the trouble of typing this whole thing...

Why Google Shouldn't Discriminate Against Paid Links

21 Apr 2008 at 14:58 by Joshua J. Steimle

Because it can't accurately identify them. Frankly, I don't have much against Google having something against paid links. It's their search engine, they can do whatever they want with it. Of course I'd prefer they live and let live when it comes to paid links, for my own self-interest as someone who occasionally uses paid links as a way to build incoming links for my SEO clients.

But the problem is there's no way for Google--I should say "no effective way"--to differentiate between a paid link and one that isn't paid for.

Fixing Other SEO Firms' Mistakes Using Dreamweaver Wildcard Search and Replace

20 Feb 2008 at 18:31 by Joshua J. Steimle

All too often we take over search engine optimization efforts for a new client, only to find that the last SEO firm or SEO professional they were using did so many things wrong it's going to be a major effort just to clean up their mess, let alone start making progress (although I suppose cleaning up is a form of progress, but you know what I mean).

Case in point, we just took over doing SEO for a billion-dollar enterprise with a substantial website, and what do you know, the last SEO people working on it stuffed the site full of stuffed image alt tags, stuffed keyword meta tags, stuffed url title tags, etc. And they were very thorough with their work in that they didn't repeat the content of the various tags, they mixed it up in every case so they aren't the same and therefore you can't do a simple search and replace to find them all. The slow way to get things done would be to edit every page by hand, deleting the offending code, but thankfully Dreamweaver lets you do a wildcard search and replace that is a lifesaver.
