Local directory listings are definitely useful, even if only for linkback value, since (if the directory is well organized and maintained), the link to your website and information about your company will be listed among similar results for local companies. As long as the listing in the directory does not mislead the reader in any way to think that the company in question has a physical address in the given area, then there is no harm in submitting the listing. It can do nothing but benefit the website you are attempting to promote (once again, as long the directory is a legitimate company directory and not simply a linkback factory).

On a side note: Just because a company is in close physical proximity to it's customer does not necessarily mean that it will be able to give that customer better service than one from accross the country (or the world for that matter). This is especially true in reference to wholesale shopping companies, web design firms, web marketing and SEO firms. There are very few industries anymore that do not have at least some aspect of their business that can be sold and/or developed without being at their customer's physical location.

Local directories are good for ranking well in local searches. But isn't the idea of going online to attract business wordlwide? Some services such as car repairs and plumbing may be better of gettin good local rankings, but for the most part i think aiming at glabal directories is more beneficial.

Local directories work very well for businesses with a concrete location. For websites, well, less well, IMO, but it works for linking back in some situations. And maybe for some referral traffic.
