Organic SEO - For Beginners

A lot of what SEO is all about is the content on your website. When I say "content" I mean HTML text that can be selected with the mouse cursor. Graphics and Flash are not content in a strict sense, although that isn't to say you can't do things with either that can help with SEO efforts. But content is what is indexed by search engines, and so creating lots of content, organizing that content, and creating that content in the right way is a large part of SEO.
If you're just starting out, this post will serve as an introduction to the basics of creating content in ways that are SEO friendly. If you want to dig a little deeper into the theories behind content and SEO, read Good, Better, Best--Writing Content for Search Engine Optimization.

The word "sitemap" has typically been used to describe a page on your website that has links to all the other pages on your site in one place, arranged in a hierarchical structure, like this. The sitemaps we talk about in this post are similar, in a sense, and yet completely different.
Both Google and Yahoo! allow you to upload an XML file, called a sitemap or sitemap file, that tells the search engines key information about your website. The benefit to you is that your site's pages get indexed more quickly and completely than they might otherwise. Yes, some experts say to use the sitemap feature with caution, but you're just a beginner, so carry on. Oh, and if you don't know what "XML" stands for, just ignore it. The important thing to understand is that for the purposes of this post, the "sitemap" is a specific file on your site.

Incoming links, also call backlinks, inbound links, or “links from other sites”, are one of the primary means by which Google ranks websites. There are four ways in which incoming links can affect your website:

You've got two firms pitching you on their SEO services. One costs thousands of dollars per month, the other hundreds. There is a temptation to think "Well, I'll try the cheaper SEO services and see if it works out. If it does, I've saved a lot of money. If it doesn't, then maybe I'll go back to the other one."
The trap here is that affordable SEO services have a very low chance of being effective. Someone who tells you they can provide full-service SEO for your site for less than $500 per month is either inexperienced, giving you a super deal, or misinforming you about what they can achieve. Or they could just be straight out lying to you. I wouldn't count on it being a super deal unless the person providing the SEO services to you is a family member or a buddy.
