Here is a partial list of several factors that can affect SEO campaigns; this is not a comprehensive list, but more of a list to convince many that it is more than just adding a few words to your website. (these are not in any particular order)
1. Title tags
2. Keyword research
3 . The number of times a keyword phrase is searched for
4. The competing pages in a search engine for a particular keyword phrase
5. Alt tags
6. Meta description tag
7. Keyword weight (on the page and entire website)
8. Keyword density (on the page and entire website)
9. Keyword placement (on the top of the page, middle, bottom, etc.)
10. Number of incoming links
11. Incoming link text
12. Incoming link sites (who is linking to you and what are those websites about?)
13. Outgoing link text
14. Outgoing link sites (who are you linking to?)
15. Ratio of incoming and outgoing links
16. Meta keywords tag
17. Is the HTML search engine friendly? (javascript, flash, etc. is not helpful)
18. Do you have a site map?
19. Main navigation text
20. Web analytics (you should be tracking visitors to your site!)
21. Amount of text on a page (try to keep it at least 200 words)
21. Text that is bold
22. Text that is in italics
23. Underlined text
24. Text placement
25. Website theme
26. Number of pages on your site indexed by search engines
27. The last time your site was indexed by a search engine
28. Is your site current and change often or does it have stale content
29. Static vs. Dynamic sites
30. And probably thousands more that I can’t think of right now
